Ste. Anne’s Spa: A Day Away, All to Yourself

Published: Updated:

A solo midweek spa day in Grafton puts lunch, warm pools, and a few hours of your own back on the calendar.

After weeks of editing, designing, and distributing a magazine, I need a breather. I love the work. I also love the idea of someone handing me a robe and telling me where lunch is.

Ste. Anne’s Spa has been on my list for years. And while a spa getaway with friends has its appeal, so does going alone. No group chat, no comparing calendars until the only date that works is four months away. Just choosing a day and keeping it for yourself.

Making it a day trip means I can leave the overnight bag at home, book a treatment, eat a proper lunch, and spend the hours in between however I please. A small departure from the usual routine, with enough time to feel like you’ve actually gone somewhere.

Where is Ste. Anne’s Spa?

Ste. Anne’s is in Grafton, in Northumberland County, near Cobourg and east of Toronto. Allow roughly 90 minutes to two hours from Toronto, depending on where you start and what the traffic has in mind. From Highway 401, the approach takes you north into the countryside.

The setting is part of the appeal: rolling hills, gardens, and a heritage fieldstone building dating to the 1800s. This is country-house spa territory, with grounds to explore as well as places to soak. It gives a day away a little more room than the distance between a treatment room and a change room.

The dress code helps, too. Ste. Anne’s welcomes guests to dine in their robes or comfortable clothing. Once you’ve changed, there’s no need to pull yourself together again for lunch. An excellent arrangement.

A spa day on your own terms

Going alone removes a surprising amount of negotiation from a day off.

Perhaps you want a massage and a long stretch with a book. Perhaps you’d rather walk before lunch, then spend your afternoon moving between the pools and somewhere comfortable to sit. You can be sociable when you feel like it and quiet when you don’t.

For anyone whose work involves making decisions all day, that flexibility has appeal. Even enjoyable plans can come with a little administration: where to eat, when to leave, whether everyone has had enough time in the water. A solo day gives you fewer people to check in with.

Eating alone might be the part that gives you pause. Bring a book if you’d like. Or let lunch be lunch, without a screen beside the plate. You don’t need to leave feeling newly comfortable with every aspect of solitude. You’re allowed to simply enjoy being served a meal.

What the day-spa package includes

The all-inclusive day visit at Ste. Anne’s Spa runs from 8:30am-6pm., giving you a full day rather than a treatment followed by a quick exit.

The package currently includes a three-course lunch, afternoon tea, and a $150 spa and wellness allowance, along with access to facilities such as the outdoor hydrotherapy pools, eucalyptus inhalation room, outdoor sauna, and hiking trails.

At the time of writing, the listed price is $375–$475 per person. This is a considered treat, and it’s worth understanding the allowance before booking: you have $150 to put toward spa treatments and wellness classes, rather than unlimited services. Your choices may add to the total.

Meals and treatments are scheduled with the spa team. For a solo visit, I’d leave some generous gaps between them. It’s easy to approach a day with the same enthusiasm you use to fill a work calendar, then find yourself hurrying to relax.

Choose what you most want to do and give it some space. You don’t have to try every facility to have made good use of the day.

Leave a little of the day unplanned

The simplest thing to pack might be the easiest to overlook: something you’d enjoy doing when nobody needs anything from you.

A novel. A notebook. A swimsuit for the pools, of course. Ask the spa team about anything else you’ll need when you book, along with current facility access and the timing of your chosen treatment.

For me, the appeal of a solo day at Ste. Anne’s is having a stretch of time that doesn’t need to produce anything. After all those pages, deadlines, and decisions, lunch and a soak sound like plenty.
