From the Shoreline—Driftwood Art in Collingwood

From our series of contributed stories, we present “From the Shoreline,” a short film by Brian Hunt, featuring driftwood artist Mark Arnold of Georgian Bay Driftwood Art.

“I spent a few quiet mornings and afternoons on Georgian Bay with my friend Mark, watching him do what he does best. Mark walks the shoreline collecting two things: driftwood and garbage. One becomes art. Watching him work, you realize the cleanup and the creating are the same act. He leaves the beach better than he found it, and turns what the water left behind into something worth keeping.”

A personal note from Brian:

“Every so often I make something that has no client, no brief, and no deliverables attached to it. Just me, my craft, and a subject worth pointing a camera at. This is one of those pieces.

I have known Mark for a long time, and I have always admired what he does. He walks the shores of Georgian Bay collecting driftwood for his art, and he picks up the garbage while he is at it, leaving the beach better than he found it.

Following his process reminded me why people like Mark keep creating in the first place. Not for a paycheck, but because the work itself matters to them.

This was also a chance to put new tools through their paces. I recently picked up the Blackmagic Pyxis 12K and a set of cine-modded vintage Soviet lenses from Iron Glass USA, and shooting something purely for the art of it was the perfect way to learn what they can do.

Here is the thing I want to say to anyone who works in the creative world. If you spend all your time making content for corporations, brands, and businesses, it is easy to get stuck.

The commercial work pays the bills and I am grateful for it, but spec pieces, the ones you make just for yourself, are how you keep growing. They are where you take risks, try the new lens, chase a feeling instead of a metric, and remember why you started.

Mark does it with driftwood. I do it with a camera. Both of us are just trying to make something honest.”
